More good news for Stoke St Michael
The future of Stoke St Michael Youth Club which looked uncertain is now assured for the time being thanks to a grant of £1500 from the Aster Communities Wishing on a Star Scheme. Andrea helped Stoke St Michael in their application for this grant.

SRYP is itself affiliated to two of the major youth work organisations – Clubs for Young People and UK Youth and acts as their agent or constituent organisation in Somerset.
SRYP supports voluntary youth clubs by:
- Identifying the clubs and providing new clubs with start up guidelines
- Engaging with the clubs to encourage them to affiliate which gives them access to two national body’s programmes and events and the Youth Club’s Insurance Scheme.
- Supporting those that engage by providing information, regular club visits, a local events programme, sign posting, providing training, ‘health checks’ and feedback.

Latest Clubs News
Howard and Andrea recently visited two clubs. At Tatworth & Forton Youth Club they found some cooking going on. The group all had the opportunity to bake individual cup cakes which were a great success, have a go at making it in your club.
The young people spoke to us about their involvement of the youth club and talked about how important it is to them. The young people also talked about their involvement in our annual night walk that they took part in last year and are very much looking forward o it again this June/July.
Cup cake recipe
4 tbls SR flour 4 tbls sugar 2 tbls cocoa powder
1 egg 3 tbls milk 3tbls oil

At Taunton North Youth Club they found a brilliant example of a community working together with local authorities and charities to achieve a space for the community to use for all that live in the surrounding area and to have ownership and history of the facility.
The community hall will now house the youth club which will run two evenings a week, to include a junior and senior sessions, with at present all volunteer staff. A boxing club for all ages again running two sessions a week and a football club which has four sessions a week. During term time Seaworthy school will be using the building and it has already had private bookings which keeps income flowing in.
The club is supported by a big bank of 17 volunteers that all have contributed to the redecoration and setting up of the hall and youth club.

We also have an information leaflet telling you how we can support your club.
We currently have 53 affiliated clubs within our network and have established good contacts with most of these clubs over the past year. …
- Contact details: We know that the ‘officers’ of some of these groups may have changed at the beginning of the Autumn Term but as yet we have not received new contact details…. Please send all current information to our administration team at Edington: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or Tel: 01278 722100 .
- New services: Some Clubs have asked about ‘Portable Appliances Testing’ (PAT Tests). A number of SRYP staff have undertaken training and can now carry out PAT Tests so please let us know if you would like to use this new service. There is likely to be a ‘call-out’ charge plus an amount for each piece of equipment inspected – more details in the next mailing. Two further services from the County are ‘Somerset Direct’ which is an advice and service for Young Peoples’ Services, Education and Children’s Social Care. They’re contactable on 0845 345 8122 / www.somerset.gov.uk / e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
- Support, Advice & Equipment: We have received a number of requests for information and support by clubs and communities wanting to run fun and fund-raising events. During last Summer, SRYP’s Voluntary Clubs Support Team were able to help in a variety of ways: we now have details of the Somerset County Council’s new Youth Equipment Store ‘YES’ and a list of the equipment therein. The store is based at Hestercombe House in Taunton – their contact details and opening times are in the booklet. We also wanted to ‘flag up’ that SRYP hold some equipment in our offices at Edington which you may want to borrow for your club settings or event.
- Other Projects: We are really pleased to report that clubs are taking advantage of some of the other projects within SRYP e.g. the Moped Loan Scheme, the Disco and Junk Band sessions, Latisha’s Dance Workshops and Body Painting sessions or body-painting Training for young people… however for this we are asking for £1.00 per head to help cover the costs of materials used.
